Kicking back is easy at Buttonwood Grove Winery in Romulus, Seneca County: Visitors can lollygag on the outdoor deck, stroll to Buttonwood Falls, greet the resident goats or chat in the tasting room with winery owners Diane and Ken Riemer.

“On the weekends we put out free apples for eating, and we encourage people to sit on the deck (in good weather) and drink wine or bring their lunches. We find this is the kind of atmosphere people really like,” says Diane, a retired nurse who manages the tasting room, while Ken, a greenhouse owner in Tompkins County, tends to the vines and the wines.

Equally laid-back are the winery’s annual events, ranging from the October Festival, with hayrides, to the summertime Wild Western Day barbeue, with a country western band. A Friday night concert series is offered in the summer.

Only 10 of the Riemers’ 125 acres are vineyards, leaving ample seclusion for the winery’s log-cabin lodging. Each cabin has a front porch, perfect for watching sunlight peek through the buttonwood boughs overhead.

The tasting bar features goat cheese when it is available, as well as wine.
