Come rain or shine, Fumie Thorpe can analyze the weather with ease. Having earned a meteorology degree at SUNY Oswego, the Tokyo native often puts that skill to use as owner, vineyard manager and winemaker at Thorpe Vineyard in Wolcott, Wayne County.
Working with grapes from her 3.5-acre Lake Ontario vineyard and fruit she buys from Wayne County growers, Thorpe produces 1,000 cases annually. She relies mostly on her own palate and muscle to get the job done and plans to bump up production in the next few years.
When launching the business in 1988, Thorpe and her former husband had just 1 acre of vines and scant knowledge of how to make wine. Advice from the property’s former owner and Finger Lakes growers and vintners helped smooth the path from vine to bottle.
Options for white wine drinkers at the Wolcott tasting room include Cayuga White, Vidal Blanc and a semi-dry Riesling with slightly more than 1 percent residual sugar. Chancellor and Marechal Foch hybrid grapes figure into the winery’s most popular reds.
With the winery’s silver anniversary approaching, Thorpe plans to release a wine honoring the occasion. She has yet to finalize the grape varietal but hopes it will be as successful as the winery’s 20th anniversary wine, Tooley’s Traminette, named after her late dog.
To counterbalance the winery’s tucked-away location, Thorpe opened a satellite tasting room on Ridge Road in North Rose, Wayne County, in August 2010. Located next to the Orchard View Country Market, a bustling stop for fresh produce, flowers and Amish-made furniture, the operation sells the winery’s complete lineup.
The winery also joined the recently formed Lake Ontario Wine Trail, which has started programming monthly events. Hosting the events at the Ridge Road site instead of in Wolcott makes sense, Thorpe says, “because it is closer and kind of a little easier drive for many people.”
