Lakeshore Winery, located on a farm that dates back to 1825, is owned and operated by John and Annie Bachman, who purchased the property in 1994 from the winery's founders, Bill and Doris Brown.
The location is an ideal site for growing grapes. Proximity to the deep waters of Cayuga Lake provides enough tempering effect to enable the European (Vitis vinifera) grapes to thrive. The original barn provides a unique setting for visitors, with a view of the lake and a dock for boaters.
According to the company's Web site, the Browns purchased the property in 1978 and immediately planted Riesling, Chardonnay, Gewurztraminer and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. The first vintage was in 1981, and they began selling wine in 1982.
Several long-standing Lakeshore traditions, like the rocking chairs, the fireplace on chilly days, and the wine and food pairings, still welcome visitors to the wine tasting experience.
