Winery owner Joe Gober Jr. enjoys a good jigsaw puzzle. Even ones that take more than three years to complete.

Gober’s dream of bringing a historic structure to Americana Vineyards took flight in 2002, when he discovered an 1820s barn for sale in Trumansburg, Tompkins County. To move the barn to Interlaken, Seneca County, Gober and a small crew disassembled it into thousands of pieces. To reconstruct it at the winery, he and his helpers summoned patience, fortitude and old-fashioned elbow grease.

And the results have paid off in spades for tasting-room visitors, who now get to sip wine in a setting Gober calls “cathedral-like.”

Gober says barn raising and operating a winery are more similar than onlookers might think.

“This is a totally creative pursuit, all the way from working the grapes in the vineyards to producing (and) pouring the wines for all the tasting-room guests,” he says.

Americana, on the west side of Cayuga Lake, also reels in candy lovers with homemade fudge, offered in flavors such as cranberry-walnut, cinnamon, cappuccino and pumpkin pie.
