Interested in taking a swipe at summer’s swelter?

Just think pink.

Refreshing and versatile, rosé wine gets on famously with balmy-weather fare, such as fried oysters, burgers, grilled chicken and pasta salad. No longer the pink-headed stepchild or the afterthought at American wineries, rosé has earned a loyal following in recent years.

Visitors to Hosmer Winery, near Cayuga Lake in Ovid, Seneca County, can discover whether they have a pink predilection by sampling the non-vintage dry rosé. Boasting cranberry aroma and strawberry flavor, the wine has lip-smacking acidity.

“Rosé, particularly dry rosé, is a really good bridge between white and red wine, and they’re fantastic food wines,” says Hosmer winemaker Brent Eva. “You can drink them warm or chilled.”

Though most European rosés are made from red grapes only, Hosmer’s is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay and Cayuga White.

Eva, a fomer chef, also puts his stamp on the rest of the product line, ranging from Vinifera whites and reds to sangria and dessert wine.

Equally sweet is the reception tourists get from the tasting-room staff. Acting genuinely engaged and comfortable in the knotty-pine setting, the employees make getting to know the wines a pleasant experience.
