Wine and the arts have always gone together, says winery founder Coralee Burch.

So adding an art gallery and a winery in 1998 to an 1830s farmhouse seemed natural for the retired communications professor and her late husband, David Hannie.

“We felt that wine was one of the arts of the (Finger Lakes) region,” Burch says, adding that living in Italy for eight years before returning to Watkins Glen, Schuyler County, also influenced her desire to launch a business with multiple purposes.

Burch says fostering an atmosphere of self expression thrilled Hannie, who made a living from his analytical skills as a research scientist at Eastman Kodak Co. and then as a chemistry professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and other universities.

Burch carried on the winery’s arts programming. The art gallery features her own watercolor and pastel paintings. Like the late Walter Taylor of Bully Hill Vineyards, she also creates labels for the wines.

Burch still can be found painting at the winery from April through December, but she has handed the keys on to her daughter and son-in-law, Sara and Kurtis Vondracek.
