Bully Hill Vineyards

The largest family-owned winery in the Finger Lakes, Bully Hill produces between 150,000 and 200,000 cases of wine each year.

The Taylor family has grown grapes or produced been in the wine business since 1878. Lillian Taylor, the widow of the rebellious and legendary founder Walter S. Taylor, oversees the company today.

Winery tours are run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Tastings cost $2 per person for five pre-selected wines, or $5 including a Bully Hill wine glass. Reservations are accepted for group tours for 12 or more people, and tastings for groups cost $5 per person.

The winery includes three gift shops, and has an onsite New York State Wine Museum. An improvement project in recent years included a new retail shop and expanded wine cellar.

Lillian Taylor transformed what was a tiny sandwich shop into a 90-seat European-style cafe, which is open from May through Thanksgiving. During those months, lunch is served from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, and dinner is served from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturdays.

The eatery boasts several bright copper tabletops, an intricately carved oak wine bar and Walter's colorful artwork. The outdoor patio, which in May is awash with the scent of lilacs, seats an additional 125.

Bully Hill Vineyards has developed a reputation as an industry pioneer, and was among the first to try the synthetic cork several years ago.

The most popular wine is "Love my Goat," a semi-sweet red wine with a fanciful label.

The corks — printed with slogans like ''Wine With Love'' — complement brightly painted labels that underscore Bully Hill's funky image.

The retail shop, visitor center and gift shops are open year-round. From May through October, the hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. From November through April, the hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The retail shop's phone number is (607) 868-3210; the gift shops' phone number is (607) 868-3226.
