Wagner Vineyards

Inside its poinsettia-shaped home on Seneca Lake’s eastern shore, Wagner Vineyards offers two ways to wet your whistle.

Slaking your thirst in sudsy fashion is a breeze in the beer tasting room, where the staff doles out froth-topped shots of porter, stout and ale from the winery’s spinoff, Wagner Valley Brewing Co. For a spot of the grape, stroll down the hall to the wine tasting room, which serves selections made from Wagner Vineyards’ 250 acres of vines.

Taking a load off is easy, since visitors may enjoy full servings of beverages on the rustic deck overlooking the water. Across the lawn is the winery's Ginny Lee Restaurant, serving burgers, wraps and pizza.

All the wines available for sampling at the winery are estate, meaning that the grapes going into the bottle come from vineyards owned or supervised by Wagner. The extra level of control shows up in products such as the 2005 Riesling Select, an elegant wine dressed to the nines with peach flavor.

Other available wines including the non-vintage Alta B Red, a blend of Rougeon and DeChaunac exhibiting a pronounced mineral, moss and slate aroma; the 2003 Grace House Pinot Noir, a light-bodied red that smells like hickory and tastes slightly like strawberries; and the 2002 Cabernet Sauvignon, with a hint of crème brūlée richness.

Wagner Valley beer also has legions of fans. Produced in the style of German counterparts, the options range from Dockside Amber Lager, a scarlet-hued brew with prominent maltiness, to the Caywood Station Oatmeal Stout, the ideal wrap-up beer on account of its caramel, cinnamon and chocolate notes.

Hours: Open year-round. Wine tastings: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. From December to mid-March, the winery keeps its regular hours except on Sundays, when it opens at noon. Beer tastings: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, year-round. Wheelchair accessible. Wagner’s Ginny Lee Restaurant, which is open daily from May through October, serves until 4 p.m. Live music offered on Friday nights, Memorial Day through Labor Day.
